NAfME Election Questions Summary:

Dr. Adrian Davis’ election questions focus on the major challenges and opportunities in music education and within the association, as well as the advancement of equity and diversity in NAfME. He emphasizes the underrepresentation of minoritized populations in leadership, curriculum, pedagogy, policy, and spaces, and the influence of white supremacist ideologies in music education. Dr. Davis believes that intentional efforts to include cultural competence and disrupt the status quo can lead to a transformative and engaging music education experience.

He also highlights the need for NAfME to rebrand itself as a valuable asset for all music educators and communities, addressing concerns of inclusivity and stereotype perpetuation. Dr. Davis plans to advance equity and DEIA by assessing existing systems, marking oppressive systems, introducing counter knowledge and counternarrative spaces, decentering whiteness, and promoting critically conscious programs and services. He aims to create equal and equitable opportunities in music education for marginalized populations and change the narrative from a deficit perspective to one of equal community members. Additionally, Dr. Davis emphasizes the importance of representative leadership in music education to truly embrace diversity for underrepresented populations at all levels. He believes that effective leadership requires characteristics such as integrity, honesty, reliability, empathy, and a sensitivity to the needs of underrepresented populations.

Respectfully,

Dr. Roque Diaz
